Frequently Asked Questions

We have put together a list of questions patients typically ask us. You can find here the most important information which can help you prepare for Your next dentist appointment.

General questions

  • How can I prevent caries?

Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss and avoid sugary foods and drinks to make sure your teeth are not decayed. In addition to these, regular dental check-ups are also important.

  • How often should I go for a dental check-up?

It is best to visit Your dentist at least twice a year to make sure your teeth and mouth are healthy. It also helps you prevent tooth caries and other problems.

  • What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is generally caused by enamel thinning or gum recession, which render the teeth more sensitive to cold, heat, acidic and sweet foods and drinks. You should use toothpaste for sensitive teeth and it might be worth checking with a dentist.

  • How painful is the tooth filling process?

The tooth filling process is usually painless thanks to the modern anaesthetics. You may experience a mild discomfort after the effect wears off, but you should not expect to feel any pain during the procedure.

  • Why is flossing necessary?

Flossing can help you get rid of food residue and plaque stuck between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. As a result, tartar, gum inflammation and caries can be prevented.

Oral hygiene

  • Why do scales have to be removed?

Removing tartar is essential for preventing inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and periodontal diseases (periodontitis). Tartar irritates your gums, causes inflammation and contributes to proliferation of bacteria, which may damage both your teeth and your gums.

  • Gum treatment with laser?

Laser gum treatment entails a dentist using special laser beams to treat gum diseases. Laser technology enables dentists to remove infected or damaged tissues, to reshape the gums and to kill bacteria without causing serious pain or bleeding.

  • Teeth whitening with plasma lamp?

Teeth whitening with plasma lamp uses special, high-intensity light beams which activate the whitening agent applied on your teeth. The light emitted from the plasma lamp speeds up the whitening process so your teeth can be several shades brighter.

Fillings

  • Is the filling process painful?

Thanks to modern dentistry technologies and local anaesthesia, the filling process is usually painless. Anaesthesia ensures that patient can go undergo the treatment comfortably and painlessly. Some patients might experience mild sensitivity once the effect has worn off, but it usually disappears within a short time.

  • How should I care about my teeth after filling?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential after a filling. This includes regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups. If a tooth remains sensitive after being filled or if the filling gets loose or falls out, contact your dentist immediately.

  • When can teeth be filled without anaesthesia?

In the case of small-size and shallow cavities. If the decay has not spread deep and close to the pulp. At the patient’s request: Patients who are extremely sensitive to anaesthetics or are afraid of needles may ask the dentist to perform the procedure without anaesthesia provided that it is safe.

  • What needs to be considered?

Pain tolerance: All people tolerate pain differently. A certain pain level may be bearable for some while excruciating for others.

Ensuring patient’s calm: Pain-related fear and anxiety have a detrimental effect on treatment experience and treatment efficiency. Possible pain after treatment: even if no pain occurs during the procedure, some pain might be experienced a couple of hours after it as the anaesthetics are wearing off.

Tooth replacement

  • What does the process look like?

The process depends on the type of tooth replacement:

Crowns and bridges: The dentist prepares the tooth (or teeth), takes an impression based on which the lab manufactures the crown or the bridge, after which the item is put into place.

Implants: Implantation is a surgical procedure. Once the implant has integrated into the bone, a crown is put on it that mimics your natural teeth.

Dentures: The dentist takes an impression of your oral cavity based on which the dentures are manufactured. The patient can put them in and take them out.

  • What follow-up treatments are necessary after tooth replacements?

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential after a replacement. This includes regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups. Regularly getting the plaque and tartar removed is especially important if you have implants or bridges because it makes sure the replacement is not damaged and inflammation does not occur.

  • How long do tooth replacements last?

The durability of tooth replacements depends on a lot of factors including material quality, patient oral hygiene and the type of replacement. With regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene, tooth replacements can serve patients for years or even decades.

Orthodontics

  • At what age should the orthodontic treatment be started?

Although orthodontic treatment can be started at any age, children should make an appointment with an orthodontist at around the age of 7. A consultation so early can help dentists discover issues and start the treatment at the right time.

  • How long do I have to wear braces?

Everything depends on the patient, but typically for 1 to 3 years. The exact treatment length depends on the severity of the issues, the appliance used and patient co-operation.

  • Is wearing braces painful?

The first couple of days after the braces have been put on or when the wires are tightened typically entail inconvenience and pain. These, however, are temporary and can be easily managed with painkillers.

Root canal procedure

  • Is the oral surgery procedure painful?

You will be administered general or local anaesthesia so you won’t feel any pain. Pain can be managed easily with medication after the procedure.

  • How long does the recovery take?

It depends on what kind of surgery was performed. A couple of days’ worth of rest and proper follow-up treatment typically suffice.

  • What can I eat after surgery?

Please avoid eating hard, very warm and spicy food. It is recommended to eat soft, easily digestible food like yoghurt, soup and puree.

Intraoral scanner

  • Does the scanning process hurt?

Intraoral scanning is completely painless. The device moves gently in your mouth with no need for the unpleasant materials or long process you might experience with traditional impression taking.

  • How does the intraoral scanner work?

The dentist uses the scanner to capture every detail of your teeth in a high definition, 3D format. The captured images are readily available for dentists to see on the computer so they can thoroughly examine the condition of your teeth.

  • How long does the intraoral scanning take to do?

The scanning process takes only a couple of minutes depending on how many teeth must be scanned. Much faster than traditional impression taking.

  • How precise is the intraoral scanner?

Intraoral scanners are extremely precise, providing dentists with a much more detailed representation of your teeth than in the case of traditional impression taking. This minimizes the risks and improves the outcomes.

Oral surgery procedures

  • How long does recovery take after an oral surgery procedure?

Special attention must be paid to oral hygiene during the recovery period after oral surgery procedures. Antibiotics and painkillers are often prescribed and patients are instructed how they can take care of surgical wounds. Regular follow-up examinations are necessary to make sure the healing process is smooth.

  • What is PRF and how does it work?

Platelet-rich fibrins are an autogenic biomaterial (coming from the patient’s blood itself)which is obtained with a blood centrifuge. During the process, the dense concentrate of platelets and growth factors mix in the fibrin network, which is characterized by excellent wound healing properties.

  • What procedures use PRF?

PRF is used for numerous oral surgery procedures such as:

Tooth implantation: PRF can help the bone and soft tissue around the implant heal faster. Bone grafting and bone regeneration PRF can improve osseointegration of the bone transplant, as well as bone regeneration.

Gum surgery: In the case of gum surgeries, PRF can foster faster wound healing and reduce post-operative pain.

Wound healing after tooth extraction: Areas prepared with PRF can heal faster and without complications.

Baby tooth removal

  • When is it necessary to remove a baby tooth?

Tip: Baby tooth removal may be necessary if advanced tooth decay, infection or damage occurs and if the dentist’s assessment is that the tooth cannot be saved. Dentists sometimes decide to remove a baby tooth if it blocks the proper growth of a permanent tooth.

  • Do baby teeth need to be treated if they fall out anyway?

Yes. Treating baby teeth is important because they play a vital role in chewing, speaking and preserving the place of permanent teeth. Lack of care may lead to tooth decay which, if untreated, may impact permanent teeth, too.

  • What is fissure sealing?

Fissure sealing means that a protective layer (sealant) is applied on the chewing surface of the teeth, especially onto the deep grooves of the molars. This prevents food and bacteria getting into to the hard-to-reach grooves, thereby reducing the risk of tooth decay.
